It is with mixed emotions that the Coastal America Partnership announces the retirement of Virginia K. Tippie. After 30 years of service with the federal government, Virginia retired on January 3, 2013. She will be greatly missed by the Coastal America Partnership. For the past twenty years, there was never a dull moment for Virginia at the Coastal America Partnership.
Dear Friends and Colleagues
After 30 years with the federal government, I will be retiring effective January 3, 2013. I have had the honor and privilege of serving our nation in a variety of challenging and interesting positions. From my first federal job as Director of the EPA Chesapeake Bay Program to my tenure as NOAA’s Assistant Administrator for Ocean Services and Coastal Zone Management to my current position as Director of the interagency Coastal America Partnership, it has been a great ride! I have so many wonderful memories of various collaborative efforts from developing the Chesapeake Bay Agreement of 1983 to forging the unique national partnership between the federal government, corporations, NGOs and aquaria that is Coastal America. However, throughout my federal career, the most rewarding experience has been meeting so many wonderful people along the way. I truly have been fortunate to work with many outstanding individuals and I will always treasure the meaningful relationships that evolved. Working together in partnership, we were able to accomplish a lot and I am proud of our legacy.
Although I am sad to be leaving Coastal America, I look forward to helping restore and protect our coasts in a new capacity working through the Coastal America Foundation. I am also very pleased that NOAA will continue to provide leadership for Coastal America through: Margaret Davidson, Acting Director, Office of Ocean & Coastal Resource Management, NOS; Louisa Koch, NOAA Director of Education; and Ralph Cantral, Senior Advisor to the Partnership. Please contact any of these individuals if you have any questions or concerns regarding the Coastal America federal partnership, the learning center network or the corporate partnership. There will also be continuity in the Coastal America National Coordinating Office staff with Carli Bertrand, Gwen Archer-Pailen, Ellen Gordon and Arturo Herrera. Needless to say, I am confident that Coastal America is in good hands.
Farewell and best wishes.
Virginia K. Tippie
Director, Coastal America
